Humane Dispatch

Once a mink has been captured, the next task is to kill it as quickly and humanely as possible. Fortunately, this can be achieved instantly. The preferred method is to use an air rifle or powerful air pistol and, because the mink is constrained at close quarters, it is simple to bring about instant unconsciousness and subsequent death with one well-aimed pellet to the head.  A way of avoiding adding lead to the environment is to use steel Prometheus pellets, if your air gun is suitable.  If a dead mink cannot be collected for more detailed post-mortem, then it should be buried, but obviously not before you have made all your records! Further helpful advice on the safe use of air guns is available from BASC; links to their guidance is available on our generic risk assessment
